Tony Hayward creates locations, modest in scale, small enough to fit, a dozen at once, into a single room or shop window. He makes spaces by editing paintings that he finds in flemarkets: the editing involves reshaping, then adding a dimension. |
| |
Using modelmaker's materials, such as gritted card and green flock lawn or pasture paper, and planting these with miniature ornaments he extends the scene. The immediate effect is to dramatise what has become the backdrop; suddenly Alps and castles, riverbanks with cottages and bridges and other such amenities, are released from the clutches of kitsch into realms of advanced make-believe. |
