'Industrial Society and Its Future', Unabomber's Cabin, Montana, 1996 is a replica of Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski's, cabin. Kaczynski is a Harvard graduate who withdrew from the world to live in a remote part of Montana. From inside his self-made cabin he constructed mail bombs, with which to target institutions that supported technological advancement. The work consists of a model and a film with a soundtrack. The film depicts the process of making a mail bomb (the instructions were sourced from the Internet). The soundtrack was generated using a computer program to read out the Unabomber's manifesto, titled 'Industrial Society and Its Future'. The work plays with Kaczynski's anti-technological manifesto, using computer programming to present his ideas. The awkwardness of the computer reading, distances the viewer further from his ideas. |
